As an obstetrician of over 30 years standing, Dr Nick Lolatgis has delivered countless ‘bouncing babies’ ~ and gained tremendous personal satisfaction from seeing each and every one of them born.
“It’s a special time I hold dear; and whether it involves managing a high or low risk pregnancy over the 9 or so months, my professional priority remains the same ~ ensuring the health and safety of both mother and child at all times.
“For every individual patient, my approach is to tailor an Antenatal Care program that fully takes into account the personal situation and past medical history of each mother-to-be; and right from the outset, allows me to identify and manage any risk factors and conduct all appropriate tests to screen for diseases (including Down’s Syndrome). Initially, this involves blood and urine analysis and ultrasound examinations. But of course as time goes on, it’s all about regularly ensuring that the baby is developing normally in the right position; and providing all the support and advice necessary for patients to cope well with their pregnancy ~ both physically and emotionally.
NB I’ll of course let you know the sex of your baby (or maybe twins) if you really wish to know in advance. Otherwise, I’m perfectly happy for the arrival of a ‘girl or boy’ to remain a delightful surprise”.
For pregnant women of advanced maternal age, screening with chorionic villus sampling (CVS) or Amniocentesis is discussed; and special advice and informational handouts are provided. It is usually recommended that a folic acid supplement of 500 micrograms per day is taken for the first 12 weeks of their pregnancy. This is important to promoting healthy growth and development of the foetus; and in helping to prevent neural tube defects such as spina bifida.
Dr Lolatgis is available 24/7 to respond to his patients various needs and does not participate in any roster system. He sees pregnant women by appointment at both his Clayton and Richmond rooms; and delivers at both St Vincents Private hospital and Epworth Freemasons in the city, as well as the Jessie McPherson hospital in Clayton.
